Herbaceous shrubs with heart-shaped (cordate) leaves which have symmetrical bases. The leaves are alternate (one per node) with the stems forming a zigzag pattern. The leaves have long petioles, which are grooved on the top and twisted, where they join the stem. The leaves do not have a strong odor when crushed and the stems do not produce latex when cut.
